Pentecost - Again!
A Jewish pilgrim festival - Shavuot - The Feast of Weeks, or in Greek Pentēkostē (the 50th day after Passover). Marks the wheat harvest in Israel and also commemorates God giving the Ten Commandments at Mount Sinai.
Also, this is Aldersgate Sunday for the Methodist Church. Remembering how John Wesley reluctantly attended a meeting on Aldersgate Street, where, as he wrote in his journal:
"About a quarter before nine, while he was describing the change which God works in the heart through faith in Christ, I felt my heart strangely warmed. I felt I did trust in Christ"
This is the Birthday of our Christian Church!
A story of transformation:
|Easter Disciples||Pentecost Disciples|
|Frightened||People with a sense of purpose|
What is the Spirit saying to the Church? is the question asked at the opening and closing of Methodist Conference.
- What is the Spirit saying to Greymouth Uniting?
- What is the Spirit saying to me and you?
They saw what looked like tongues of fire. What we see matters.
Persecution threat vs people changing positively. Fear vs Courage.
One of the ceremonies of the wedding I attended in the USA is called Jaggo. The bride/bridegrooms maternal aunt carries a vessel of lights on her head. The ladies then go into other friends and families homes calling "Jaggo" which means wake up! The purpose of the call to wake up is that they have the wedding to prepare for. The fact that it was the women traditionally would make a lot of sense because of the amount of food preparation and ceremonial preparation that they do. It is a loud ceremony, filled with joy, dancing, fireworks, and food.
Is the Holy Spirit telling us to Wake Up!?
The disciples were all filled with the Holy Spirit. Waiting for God not telling God. Listening not talking.
We are born like the Church at Pentecost, into possibility. What we decide to do with the motivating Spirit we receive will determine the significance in the future for who we are:
- What our church is
- What our community is
- What our world is
